The Lauwiner Cross is the most ancient device of the House. It appears upon the flag, the shield, the great seal and the personal arms of the King.
Symbolism
The four arms of the cross signify the four cardinal virtues by which the House governs: justice, prudence, fortitude and temperance. Their meeting at the centre denotes the unity of these virtues in the person of the sovereign.
The proportions of the cross are fixed by ancient ordinance: the horizontal arm is half the length of the vertical, and each is twice the breadth of the field at its broadest. No variation is permitted in heraldic use.
