The Order of Merit is conferred upon subjects of the Empire and upon foreigners for service to the public good, advancement of letters, arts, sciences, or charity.
Classes
- Grand Cross — the highest class, reserved to sovereigns and to the most eminent
- Commander — for distinguished service over a long career
- Officer — for notable service in a particular field
- Knight — the entry class of the Order
Insignia
The badge of the Order is a cross of eight points in gold, charged at the centre with the Lauwiner Cross in burgundy enamel, suspended from a ribbon of burgundy with gold edges. The star, worn by Commanders and above, is silver of eight points.
Investiture
The investiture is conducted by the Sovereign in the throne room of the Palace, in the presence of the Chancellor of the Orders and two senior members of the House.
